Love & Integrity. Like Peas & Carrots.

Last night I attended a talk by Nina Totenberg, NPR’s decorated legal affairs correspondent. She’s a woman I’ve listened to umpteen times on All Things Considered. When I agreed to go to the event I secretly wondered if it would be too political, too intellectual, too over my head. But my ears perked up when she began to share her personal stories. Ms. Totenberg spoke fondly of her close friends, Cokie Roberts and Linda Wertheimer, and went on to tell the story about how she met her first husband, Floyd Haskell.

It’s the kind of love story you get all dreamy about. Apparently Floyd worshiped Nina and while she didn’t say it, the tone of her voice made it clear she was equally smitten. Ms. Totenberg described Floyd as having more integrity than anyone she’s ever known and noted that if all civil servants operated with such honesty, the world would be a different place. Her story gives me hope.
